To start: this rod is very darkly flamed and the nodes are brilliant in contrast and this is original, as all that was done in this area was to dip varnish it after wrapping. The guides are bronzed steel, very thin and very high. The ferrules are what is called waisted, hourglass or potbelly. The tiptops have what appears to be "Pat. 8-3-15" on each of them. The grip has a spacer (hard like a bakelite?) in the center of it and the butt cap is marked on 4 lines "E.F. PAYNE", "MAKER", "HIGHLAND MILLS", "N.Y.". The hang tag is a very early one and is marked on the 1st line next to NO. "3208".... in Marty Keanes, Classic Rod & Rodmakers" on pg. 62 it shows model 208's in either a Dark or Light rod. On the 2nd line of the tag is written "Clapp & Treat". The label on the tube is from Clapp & Treat. Inc. "HARDWARE, PAINTS, MILL SUPPLIES, FISHING TACLKE and LINE" HARTFORD, CONN. And the label over top of that for who we imagine is the owner reads "S.C. Mead, 41 Wash. St, Greenwich, CT".
The questions are: Have you ever seen such a darkly flamed Payne rod like this and wrapped in these colors, about how old would you think it to be, and what about it's value?
If you would like to see this rod, it will be up at the CFFC&M ~ Arts of thhe Anglers show in Danbury, Ct this weekend.
Thanks, Bob
