I just picked up a hardy taupo and the handle with a portion of the winding plate has been broken off. The rest of the reel showes no signs of damage and It
must have happened early since there is little wear. It will probably go to Bill A for a fix but I wanted to check to see if there wasn't one around that
needed a home.

Hi ,
If i were you i would consider sending it to hardy Alnwick uk,you can get the full address of there web site,I think they still have the taupo stamp and it is
well worth getting it done as close to original as possible.
Its quiet a valuable reel now days.If you do send it put for the attention of C.Norris, pm me and i will tell him what it is and who from.
chris.
I was actually offered a taupo plate by a forum member but it is in use right now on a standard 3 7/8 perfect. I would also have to come up with a standard
perfect plate to replace it. The reel is working well right now, just a little ugly and I think the handle should be moved to a part of the plate that is more
trustworthy. I did not realize it was easly switched and was thinking someone might have a plate assembly from a broken up reel. I do not knw if it would be
worth going through all the expense and trouble to get it back to correct, haveing work done on two reels or sending it back to englend, jut to fish it hard.
What are Taupo's selling for.

Hi,
The Taupo is a wider reel than the standard 3 7/8" perfect,so a straight simple swap of winding plate and spindle will not work. The plates themselves can
be swapped but it wont have the Taupo logo on it.This is not a job i would recomend for the ametour to take on.if you get the reel done i would recomend
getting a counter balance wgt put on opposite the handle as this really helps smoth things out on a fast run of a fish.
These reels even 15 years ago fetched around £500/$800US but for some reason prices have been less this last few years, but still a valuable and quiet hard to
get reel.Only few of these reels were fitted with a nice nickel silver line guard and these are superb reels.

Who ever offered you the face plate on the standard width reel, BUY IT. Coming up with the common 3 7/8" plate can be done, I will help
you get one
Well, if I came up with the standard winding plate for the reel, I would probably just use that one. To restore this reel means quite a bit of money in my
mind. I would have to buy the winding plate and another plus pay for work to be done on two reels. With what I have into this reel already, it would end up
costing more than buying one already in good shape. The size is right for a 12' 6" meiser that is being built for me and the reel is tight and if it
is in working order it will be just fine for me with or without the taupo stamped into the plate. My hope with the post was to find a winding plate that had
no partner so if i picked it up it would only be one reel to pay for work for. Thanks for all the offers for help and keep your eyes out for me. I sent it
off to Bill but am still looking. When I am gone or done with this reel, someone else can try and restore it to original, but hopefully it will be too worn
out to do so.
