I'll be posting pics tomorrow, but man oh man. This guy just makes some fine rods. I ordered my 8'3'' 4wt Hollow Built a year ago and he told me it'd be a year out. I swear he completed it to the day. The rod is everything I expected an more. I knew Marty's rods are hollowed out, but it is shockingly light in hand. If we didn't have snow still on the ground here in Jackson, I'd be abusing this thing on the rivers or lawn casting it. No question this is my new go to rod for the Henry's Fork and most any other river. His cosmetics are simple yet very elegant...like Reams or Brandin, they complement the rod but don't overtake it. Just giving this maker some well deserved kudos.

I got the same rod last May from Marty, I agree with you completely on your thoughts.......my analysis is that it is the closest thing to the TMF in cane there is......I really like it a lot!

Like Mike Spittler has gone without his due for a long time Marty has been in that same camp but I think he doesn't really mind that and only builds around 12 rods a year. Beside having built many great rods there's much to be said about the Man behind the rods and Marty is a class act! I find his rods to be all of the above in the West Coast tradition. So North Branch you're in for a treat when you get out on the stream with your Karstetter rod. Now with that said I know there are many rods made in this configuration with 4 other contemporaries coming to mind. The Wojnicki 251 F4 or 83-4, Reams 83-4, Linnéa Rods by Erik Petersen 83-4, and last but not least the Brandin 83-4. All Hollow Built, very simplistic in nature extremely light and the perfect spring creek rods made to perfection! I have my favorite but I will not go into that. That's what the phone or email is for. Have fun with your new addition NorthBranch and remember your Kagerow is waiting for you ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for posting the pics Rick. My camera is kind of crappy and I almost feel I'd be doing the rod an injustice using it to take photos. I'm gonna have to bum a buddies and then post pics. I chose the blued ferrules and seat hardware for mine, but the rest is the same. I had to call Marty today to tell him how happy I was with the rod...he quite possibly is the most humble person I have had the pleasure of speaking with. Those list of makers below put Mr. Karsetter in some fine company...I'll take one of each please! One of these days I need to hear some of the rods you have in your personal collection! I'll be back in Tahoe this Spring, so hopefully we can test these two out proper on Hat Creek. |
